Reds “Freel Out” Deal, Get Ramon Hernandez’s Corpse

Yesterday, the Reds traded Ryan Freel, Brandon Waring, and Justin Turner
to the Baltimore Orioles for 33 year old catcher, Ramon Hernandez. The
Orioles also threw in $3 million for the deal. Freel is due $4 million for
2009, and Ramon is due $8 million (meaning Reds will pay $5 million of
that). How does this shake out for [...]

Should the Reds Trade Homer Bailey for Jermaine Dye?

With news that Walt Jocketty is rumored to be willing to deal Homer
Bailey and one other player for Jermaine Dye, I feel it may be
informative to look at how valuable Dye actually is.

MLJ Stat of the Day

A common misconception is that VORPies hate the stolen base. That couldn’t be further from the truth. Stolen bases are great and very valuable. What VORPies do hate, however, are caught stealings. One caught stealing hurts considerably more than one stolen base helps. Therefore, when evaluating players, it’s not helpful to look at stolen bases [...]

Quality Start: Homer(s) Party

Last night, a ton of bombs were hit by players I like. Adam Dunn, Jay Bruce, and Joey Votto are three of my favorite guys, and they hit 5 homers between the 3 of them (2 each for Bruce/Votto). Adam Dunn is now 2 homers away from his 5th consecutive 40 homer / 100 walk [...]

Public Service Announcement: Have You Seen This Man?

Never to shy away from our civic duties, we here at MLJ have taken it upon ourselves to help find Aaron Harang (right). One of the best pitchers in the NL from 2005-2007 (FIPs of 3.59, 3.64, and 3.70, respectively), Harang has been missing for the Reds the entire season. Sure, someone wearing a Harang [...]

Because I’ll Never See Another Reds World Series In My Lifetime

The first Video Friday of the post-Adam Dunn Era has me feeling pretty down. I have absolutely no faith in the current ownership group to field a winner. This sucks. So here’s a video celebrating the 1990 Reds.

Notes: Check out the OF defense. First, Paul O’Neill guns down Andy Van Slyke [...]

The Cincinnati Reds Meet Newsradio

My favorite non-Seinfeld show of the 90s was unquestionably NewsRadio. It was your basic ensemble sitcom, but the acting was superb, taking the show to another level. Given the recent events involving my Reds, I thought a post comparing a few key players to the cast of NewsRadio was apt. If you’re not a fan [...]
