Remembering the Duel in the Sun

duelinthesun

A little heavy on the golf content, I know, but bear with me…the Open returns to Turnberry’s Alisa course in a handful of days, and it was home to one of the greatest showdowns in golf history, one which makes Tiger vs. Rocco seem pithy and insignificant.

In 1977, Jack Nicklaus was at the height of his powers, possessing the mature game of a seasoned veteran who was as dangerous a player on the links as possible.  In 1977, Tom Watson was the reigning Player of the Year, had already beaten Nicklaus at Augusta, and who’s Open win in 1975 was just the tip of the iceberg of what may have been the career of the greatest modern links golfer.

In 1977, Nicklaus and Watson had lapped the field by the end of the 2nd round and went toe to toe for two straight days in the abnormally beautiful weather that was dubbed the Duel in the Sun.

Under the Lights

Today was an awesomely fantastic wonderful day here at MLJ.  I didn’t get to participate in the greatness, but I heard things.  I heard that this was the hottest spot to be learning about baseball.  I hope someone mentioned in the Day Baseball Update that Clifford Lee has been pwning people.  The Indians blanked the Meth Sox 4-0 and got home runs from V-Mart and Ryan Garko.  Grady also singled in LaPorta for an insurance run.  Currently, the Nationals are shutting out the Giants 2-0 in San Fran.  As of 5:42 ET, Ryan Zimmerman has yet to get a hit.  It’s the top of the 7th, so he will get another chance to take the streak to 31 games.

One game in the NL has gone for the final.  The Braves defeated the Mets 8-7 in 12 innings at Citifield.  The exciting pitching matchup of Jon Niese vs JoJo Reyes saw over 15 innings pitched from the two bullpens.  Martin Prado homered in the 12th for the Braves and some guy came in and got the save.

There is a full lineup of games tonight.  Here are the matchups: Read the rest of this entry »

Nice Chestacles

Nice Chestacles

There was no baseball today meaning we have a full schedule of games on tonight.  We also have 2 playoff games tonight in the NBA.

First up is the Orlando @ Boston.  I purposely pulled into a TD Banknorth location today when I needed an ATM just so I would feel like I was involved in the series somehow.  It’s kinda like how I drink Miller Lite and feel like I’m at Miller Park.  I’m growns up like that.  Boston was “upset” in Game 1 in their Eastern Conference Semifinals matchup.  I use upset lightly because Orlando has Dwight Howard.  That guy is a specimen.  I don’t know how they ever lose.  They should be able to feed him the ball inside and watch him score at will.  He also should grab every board.  But he doesn’t.  Boston will look to get out early and get a lead instead of falling behind and playing catchup like the did in the first game.  They should get Scalabrine the ball more.  Not that I think he’s good, it’s just always funny when I guy who looks like Will Ferrel (IMO, but everyone has their own guy Scalabrine looks like) has the ball.

The second game of the night is the Rockets @ Lakers. Houston stunned LA with an upset victory in Game 1 against the Lakers.  The Lakers couldn’t hit a shot in Game 1 and look Read the rest of this entry »

Under the Lights: I Didn’t Forget (But I Almost Did)

Feliz 5th of MayHoly poop, I’m about to go to a friends get together for his birthday/Cinco de Mayo, and I just remembered to do this. It goes without saying that this was probably the worst non-Hostican’td day in the history of our epic site. Nothing was going on and nobody wore any sweet newsboys or fedoras, so we just couldn’t bring the badass content like we usually do.

Look to your right for any prospective baseball games you might want to see. If you’re into hockey, there’s the Canucks and the Sportsgal’s beloved Blackhawks (seriously, that makes me more sick than Stigs’ infatuation with the Marlins – I thought she was a Wings fan?). If you’re into professional basketball, the Hawks play at Cleveland and the Mavs continue their series against Denver.

Also, new American Idol tonight and I’m sure some other goodies that you can mention in the comments, if you wish.

After the jump, learn how to do a terribly awesome (awesomely terrible?) haka in skate shoes): Read the rest of this entry »

It’s one of those sports science videos that FSN does but this one impressed the hell out of me.  Today we’re trying to determine if Happy Gilmore’s run up to the tee approach would actually benefit your drive and Padraig Harrington gives it a go.

Fast forward to the the three minute mark so you can skip all the bullshit introductions and just watch his shot.  It’s identicle to if he were standing still.  Amazing.  Also, check out his feet as he does his run up.  I’m guessing he used to be a dancer.

Under The Lights: It’s a Celebration

dwayne-wadeHappy bloggiversary! It should come as no surprise that today was the best blog-birthday in the history of internetting. And today, was a tremendous – may I go so far as “perfect?” – yes, PERFECT day in this section of cyberspace. I got it started with a tremendous joke about binary code, then there were all sorts of highlights from the first year of MLJ’s existence. (We’re shooting for 100+)

It’s a pretty big weekend. My roommate is celebrating his 26th birthday. Tomorrow is the Kentucky Derby. It’s the start of gambling season! (Interesting Fact: Gambling Season never actually ends.) Needless to say, I’m considering drinking some beers.

There’s also some sports tonight:

Heat-Hawks Game 6 – Will the far superior team close out the Heat tonight? Or will the referees ensure that Dwyane Wade ties the series by sending him to the line 20+ times? Read the rest of this entry »

The Top 5 Conferences In College Baseball

Conference strength really comes into play in college basketball, even more than in college basketball. Because the selection process is so heavily dependent on RPI, a terrible conference can really put you in the hole. Some teams try to combat this by playing a tough non-conference schedule. Kansas has played series at San Diego State, Arizona State and Arkansas, three potential Omaha teams, this season. Others go the opposite way and hope that a gaudy record against bad competition can boost their numbers (hello Virginia). In the case of Virginia, being in a strong conference can save them. But just how strong is the ACC? Your top 5, in ascending order: Read the rest of this entry »

The Good, Bad and Ugly: Esquire’s 75 Albums Every Man Should Own

live

So Esquire put out their “75 Albums Every Man Should Own” list and, frankly, it sucked the most giant set of balls in the known universe.  The thing that pissed me off was how badly the asshole writer wanted to appear like he knew what he was talking about so he just ignored the real great albums, and instead, picked albums that weren’t nearly as important.

Ladies, roll up your sleeves…we got some serious work to do. Read the rest of this entry »

The cat's name is Skittles

The cat's name is Skittles

By the time you read this (I put it together early this morning, but when you’re the new guy, you tend to get relegated to the 4 o’clock hour. Plus this is pretty mindless and stupid), there is a chance that you will have already been told by someone else earlier today to go to Skittles.com. That’s usually what happens when something hits the information superinterstate; someone sends you a link, you click on it, then you forward it on until everyone and their grandmother has seen it and forwarded it. But in the off-chance that you have not yet clicked on that link, do me a favor and click on it. I’ll hang up and listen to your comments after the jump. Read the rest of this entry »

Under The Lights

Today was inarguably the most glorious day in the history of the world wide web, but I have a feeling what happens tonight may top it. Let’s see what’s on the tube.

Spurs @ Wizards: The Spurs apparently nixed a deal that would have netted them Marcus Camby and only giving up George Hill, Bruce Bowen, and Fabricio Oberto. I’m really glad they didn’t pull that move, as it would have instantly vaulted them into the Cleveland-Boston-Faker stratosphere. They go against one of the worst teams in the league tonight.

Hornets @ Jazz: The day after their owner died, the Jazz welcome the Hornets into one of the best home courts in the league. I’m sure it’ll be a somber affair with emotions running high, but look for the Jazz to pull this one.

Thunder @ Warriors: Two teams that like to score, score, score and play zero defense square off. First to 120 wins.

Already happened: Miami 96, Philadelphia 91 — Dwyane Wade had 25 points and 9 in a Saturday afternoon matinee against the 76ers. I think the trade for Jermaine O’Neal was not wise. He makes them a worse team, and he’s on the books for $23 million next year. Yikes.

Enjoy your Saturday evening.
