Lineup Comparisons Using CHONE: Mets vs Phillies

mets-reyes-slideIn my on going efforts to inform you, the reader, on how Omar Minaya is singlehandledly ruining the Mets, I decided I wanted to compare the Mets lineup to the NL East standard bearer Phillies. You see, the average Met fan has this sick delusion that the Mets lineup is not at all different than the Phillie lineup. This idea is backed up by saying, “Reyes, Wright, Beltran and Bay are the fuckin’ same as Rollins, Utley, Howard and Werth. World Series motherfucker. WOOOOOOOOOO”

While I have a slight issue with that statement, overall it is valid. Now what we, the Met fan, neglect is that the other four Phillies shit all over the other four Mets. I hear similar statements to, “Dude, really Murphy is only going to get better!” or ” Francoeur ain’t that bad. He is a good glove with power in right.” or “Omir Santos is fucking fiesty man. He is so clutch.” or “I hope Luis Castillo dies in a plane crash.” That goes along with the prevailing thought if 10 things go right the Mets can be right in there for the pennant. OK. Fine. If Murphy, Frenchy, Castillo, Santos, Maine, Pelfrey, Ollie Perez, Kelvim Escobar, a couple of Japanese guys and Bobby Parnell are way better than they are, then the Mets are truly in it. Mets Sign Japanese Left Hander Who Can’t Get Lefties Out

Takahashi

Ahhhhh, the Mets. Just when I think Omar is done fucking the Met fan base in it’s collective asshole, he goes and signs Hisanori Takahashi and totally redeems himself. Who is Hisanori Takahashi you ask? Well, he is 34 years old. He is left handed. He is Japanese. He pitched 25 games last year in which he had a 2.95 ERA and struck out 126 in 144 innings. That seems pretty decent but then I read this scouting report: Read the rest of this entry »

Mets Add Another Marginal Major Leaguer to the Pile

mike-jacobsThe Mets, who are apparently going head to head with the Royals for acquiring players with low on base percentages and shitty gloves, signed Mike Jacobs, a player off of the Royals scrap heap. Met fans may remember Mike Jacobs as the guy who hit 11 home runs in six weeks at the end of the 2005 season which increased his value enough that it made him a main piece of the Carlos Delgado trade. I will always appreciate Jacobs for that. I never felt the need to bring him back for a victory lap though.

The Mets gave Jacobs a minor league deal which is better than the guaranteed 2 million dollar Major League deal they gave to Alex Cora. The hope is Mike Jacobs can come in and compete with Daniel Murphy for the opportunity to keep first base warm for Ike Davis. Since Jacobs is an “established” Major Leaguer this may give some Met fans that feeling he should be the first baseman. I wouldn’t personally since Murphy actually is the better of the two. 9 Days Until Spring Training and the Mets Make a Major Change

Cut her down!

Finally, the Mets make an announcement that should have an effect on their pathetic offense. No, no, they didn’t go and get a power hitting first baseman, second baseman, catcher or rightfielder…that would cost actual money. The Mets have announced that they are cutting their Centerfield wall in half! What a move! Instead of actually trying to upgrade the team with “above average major league talent” they decided to cut down a wall with the hopes that their marginal major league talent can capitalize. Well done, Mets organization. I mean what is losing a bit of home field advantage for our pitching staff when we can up Daniel Murphy’s home run total for 12 to 13! I am sure Adam Dunn, Ryan Howard, Hanley Ramirez, Chase Utley, Jimmy Rollins, Jayson Werth, Ryan Zimmerman, Larry Jones Jr, Dan Uggla, or Emilio Bonifacio won’t take advantage of this change as well.  Read the rest of this entry »

In Search of a Backup 1st Baseman, The Mets Turn to a Deity

TATIS!!!!!!!!!!!!

For it was said that Daniel Murphy will be the Met 1st Baseman. The Omarites had spoken. But in the Kingdom of Wilpon, the Metropolitans felt that Daniel Murphy was a false 1st Baseman. He would not be able to hit lefthanded pitching so it was for Omar to find a hitter who could. He looked around and saw Ryan Garko. A hideous creature that would terrify the Metropolitan people. He witnessed the Statue of Delgado, whose legend was mighty but whose body was crumbling. Where, oh where, could Omar turn?

But in the sunrise, a shadow of a mighty image emerged. One that was familiar. One that was comforting. One that could play four positions, constantly hustle, and can hit to an .800 OPS. He was a Godlike creature. One whose abilities and power is only felt when it is most needed. So Omar called out, ” Hey, you wanna come back. We need a righty bat to platoon at first. You know what I’m sayin’?” With that a mighty surge was felt. The power and the grace overcame him. He looked at Omar, pointed to the sky and screamed,”TATIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” And so it is written, Tatis has returned and all is right in the Kingdom of Wilpon.* Read the rest of this entry »

Mediocre Free Agents are Making Omar Minaya Look Like a Genius

Omar!!!!

Boy oh Boy! I couldn’t be any more pumped by the happenings in free agency this week. First, Benji Molina turns down more money with the Mets to go back to the Giants and the Joel Pineiro decides to take the same deal from the Angels that the Mets offered. Normally, I would be going off the deep end about the Mets not doing what it takes to win but in these cases I couldn’t feel any better about the Mets decision making. Well, actually I could. They would never have offered them anything to begin with but I saw their rationale on getting two mediocre players for short term deals. I should be insulted that both players, especially Molina, would turn down the opportunity to be Mets to go elsewhere. Trust me, I am not. Good for both of them. I see the decision making in both cases. Both guys took the California deals. It certainly wasn’t for tax purposes. Both states bend you over and anally rape you with a rusty pipe but at least in California the scenery is nice and the people won’t destroy you for being overpaid and mediocre. I would make the same decision. Really, enjoy sucking elsewhere. Read the rest of this entry »

Break’d News: Jason Bay Realizes He Has No Better Options; Signs with Mets

bay_lifeguard

Three and a half weeks after making a contract offer to Jason Bay, the Mets have finally waited out their man. According to Mike Francesa on WFAN, once Bay passes his physical he will be a Met. It has been quite obvious that offering slightly more than the Red Sox and then waiting for Bay to realize no one wanted him was the right course of action for the Met front office. But according to MLJ stathead and World Renowned Contrarian,  NickP, it may not be the right course of action for the Mets: Read the rest of this entry »

It’s the Holliday Season! A Look at the Mets Offseason

Mets LogoYesterday, Hef implored me to write about the Hot Stove season for the Mets thus far. So far not much has happened. I could go and give you a list of things they should do. But that wouldn’t be prudent. So I have decided to tell you what the Mets will do. Read the rest of this entry »

The Reason Why Certain Met Fans Love Daniel Murphy

daniel_murphy-scrappy

I was perusing Metsblog, hoping to read that the organization folded or did something that wasn’t asinine when the site’s founder and principle writer Matt Cerrone put up a post regarding Daniel Murphy. He ended it with this:

Last week on WFAN, host Mike Francesa asked, ‘What is it with the Met fans obsession with Daniel Murphy?’

that’s easy, because there is a section of the fan pool, of which i am in, who love murphy’s story, i.e., the young kid, dedicated, passionate, sort of an over-achiever, home grown, who loves the game, and who plays hard and works even harder… so, i’ll be the first to admit, because of his story, when murphy struggles, i probably look beyond the results… and, when he does well, like last September, April and this September, i see him on a path to being the next Don Mattingly or Mark Grace… even though, deep down inside, i know there is a chance he could very easily find himself on the bench next season, acting as ‘the next Matt Franco,’ as Joe Janish of Mets Today suggested last month

Umm…this is how it should have read. Read the rest of this entry »

Boredom: Being out of It Sucks

boredomBeing a Met fan has been a roller coaster of emotion over the past 3+ years. There were ups and downs. Great highs and the most gut wrenching, devastating lows. It was great and it sucked. It was exciting. I have been fairly blessed over the past few years. The two teams I truly give myself too, the Mets and New York Football Giants, have been relevant and winning. Or at least relevant. Now only one survives. I am not complaining about it. This is not meant to be “Whoa is me”. It just is and I am having difficulty adjusting.

It sucks not having a thing to root for on a daily basis. It has been this way since July. The Mets don’t even have a young stud to call up to occupy the mind. The development of Josh Thole, a future platoon catcher, is not what I call riveting. The last time they had a season like this, 2004, David Wright and Jose Reyes were brought up and it gave the Met fan hope. There is no hope on the horizon, unless it is store bought. That isn’t even a given since Bernie Madoff stole hundreds of millions of the Wilpon’s money. Read the rest of this entry »
