Not So Breaking’d News: Beltran Has Surgery Again

Mets doctors recommend kissing boo-boos in the healing process.

Mets doctors recommend kissing boo-boos in the healing process.

Just another kick in the nuts for Mets fans.

Carlos Beltran is expected to miss at least the next 12 weeks after having arthroscopic surgery on his right knee (He had the same surgery on that knee last summer when he missed 81 games). He decided to stop his training this winter after the pain became too severe.

The story starts to hurt even more when it seems that the surgery was done by Beltran’s personal doctor, and he didn’t even notify the Mets before having it done. Is there animosity between Beltran and the team doctors?

Carlos was injured last year June 21st, had surgery, then returned Sept 8th. He started and finished most every game til the end of the season. If you check out his stats, you would see he didn’;t miss a beat, hitting in 13 of 19 games in Sept/Oct while compiling a season average of .325, 10 Hr’s, 48 RBI’s, and 11 SB’s (No SB’s after the surgery).

There are whispers that the team doctors are inept and that’s why Beltran chose to go the personal route. Ryan Church battled multiple concussions and a bad back in his brief stint with the Mets. Some say he returned to the lineup too soon and wasn’t cared for properly by the team.

In May of 2009, shortstop Jose Reyes went on the DL with a calf injury. While rehabbing, he tore his calf muscle and was out for the remainder of the season.

David Wright suffered a concussion last season. Although he didn’t miss much time, he rebounded nicely and didn’t seem to have any lasting effects. Mets fans are grateful.

It’s too early to get into a team bio of the 2009 New York Mets. But if Beltran is out when June comes around, and these other injuries aren’t dealt with properly, someone going to have some ’splainin to do in the Mets infirmary.

David, Are you Serious?

I was reading Metsblog this morning as some guy was boring me with stuff he was trying to sell me when I read this. For those who chose not to read the link it says that David Wright hurt his knee running around the bases in the 9th inning Wednesday. Now as a Met fan this was inevitable but it was David’s response to this that got me upset: Read the rest of this entry »

Ramirez Up, Soto Down, Laughter All Around

Don't worry. This month I'll teach you all about chronic, or as you might call it, Juicy

Don't worry. This month I'll teach you all about Chronic, or as you might call it, Juicy

According to ESPN radio in Chicago, Cubs catcher Geovany Soto injured his oblique during batting practice today and was sent to the hospital for an MRI. It’s impossible to say for sure what the extent of the injury is since the MRI results haven’t been released yet, but if history is a guide, strained obliques can put a player on the DL for weeks or even months.

So in case you’re scoring at home, the Cubs had been waiting impatiently for 2 months for Aramis Ramirez to return from his shoulder injury. One day after he returned, Ryan Dempster learned of his broken toe, and one day after that, their starting catcher strained his oblique.

Awesome?

Koyie Hill will take Soto’s place in the lineup until he returns. In case you’re wondering, yes, Koyie Hill sucks.

Go Cubs Go, Go Cubs Go. Hey Chicago, whaddaya say? The Cubs won’t score any runs today. Go Cubs Go, Go Cubs Go. Hey Chicago, whaddaya say? This song is really gay.

I got a weak back

I like doods

I like doods

From the AP:

Twins catcher Joe Mauer been hampered by back pain, hurting his rehab from offseason kidney surgery. Mauer, the reigning AL batting champion, will undergo a magnetic resonance arthogram Tuesday. Doctors will inject the All-Star catcher’s back and stomach area with dye as part of the exam.

“We’ve got to figure out what’s going on so we can get him back and get him on the field,” manager Ron Gardenhire said Monday. “This is another effort to try to figure out where we are at and what we need to do. He’s not on the field yet. He’s not able to consistently go out and do anything. Concerned? Yeah.”

After reading that short passage, I couldn’t help but have the following reaction [laughing noise, followed by another laughing noise, followed by a snort, followed by the sexual violation of a small Aztec boy, followed by another laughing noise]. See, the thing about Joe Mauer is that he’s one of only two hitters on that team who is worth his shit [the other being from Canadia. Candadian. Canadanian. France.], so losing him for any amount of time will be crippling to that lineup. I looked it up* and it turns out that Joe Mauer is worth 49 wins over Mike Redmond.**

* no I didn’t
** figure estimated

How are they going to replace those 49 wins? They’re not. Which means my White Sox now have the inside track to 4th place in the AL Central. We’re well on our way. And who knows? Maybe there’s a Grady Sizemore car accident and a Zack Greinke AWOL in our future.

Hey, did you notice the AP passage said that they’re going to inject Dye into Joe Mauer’s back? Can I get that on a t-shirt somewhere?

Not So Break’d News: Kerry Wood is still a wuss

"I steal money"

"I steal money"

Kerry Wood and Joe Smith, the two relievers who were going to make the Indians’ bullpen whole again, are hurting. Wood has a sore back and Smith has a viral infection. They have not thrown since last weekend and manager Eric Wedge doesn’t know when they’ll pitch in a Cactus League game.

“He’s had a little bit of a sore back,” Wedge said, referring to Wood. “It works out fine for this part of camp. We’ve been slow-playing him a little bit.”

Wood stretched with the Indians on Wednesday morning and played catch. He’s tentatively scheduled to throw a bullpen session Friday. The sore back is a concern because Wood has been on the disabled list 12 times in the past 11 years with the Chicago Cubs. The Indians signed him to a two-year, $20.5 million contract in December to be their closer.

“I’m really liking that signing so far for the Indians,” said notable White Sox fan Happy. “I watched that guy piss off Cubs fans for a decade. It’ll be nice to watch him piss off Indians fans now.”

Break’d News: Andrew Bynum out 8-12 weeks

Kobe Bryant takes back his spotlight

Kobe Bryant takes back his spotlight

Fresh off of a few games where he was out-played by teammate Andrew Bynum, Kobe Bryant took it upon himself to destroy Bynum’s MCL*. Bynum was hurt in the first quarter of Saturday night’s win at Memphis. Bryant drove to the basket, missed the shot, and crashed into Bynum’s right leg. Bynum immediately grabbed his knee, and reports out of L.A. are that he will be out for 8-12 weeks.

Injuries Suck But They Aren’t Deadly

Every NFL season, a team has to deal with a big injury. This year, it seems some of the injuries are happening to the biggest stars. We all know about Tom Brady. I heard Hef was on his way to the candlelight vigil. We know about Osi Umenyiora. I rationally explained my feelings on the subject when it happened. Yesterday, Shawne Merriman wisely decided to shut it down for the season. He, like Umenyiora, will come back at a similar level with the proper rest and rehab. I hate to be one of those “This has never happened like this” before guys but holy fuck, can you think of a season starting off with three top NFL teams losing their best players (or second best in the Chargers case) before they had a chance to do anything? Now injuries to key players doesn’t necessarily mean your season is done. The World Champion New York Football Giants lost Shockey and Kiwanuka last year and still won the Super Bowl. The 2001 Patriots lost a Pro Bowl quarterback and, well, we know how that turned out. Hell, last year’s Chargers lost LDT and Phillip Rivers and had a gimpy Antonio Gates and made it to the AFC Championship game. I guess the point of all this is we tend to overvalue the individual player in the NFL. We reach a certain level of comfortableness with our stars and we think no one will ever ever replace those guys. A team’s ability to handle the loss is really what will make the difference in a team tanking or a team moving forward. Let’s look at the four teams that have lost a significant player and see if they will move forward with continued success: Read the rest of this entry »
