Praying For Rain Was A Little In(Sain)

spahn-and-sainI was reading Joe Posnanski’s blog on Tuesday and one of his italic’d paragraphs caught my attention.

There have been numerous attempts already at the Spahn and Sain rhyme — the best I’ve heard so far is “Gil, Kyle and Zack then hope for a comeback” or “Zack, Kyle and Gil and then wait until.”

This of course is in reference to the rhyme “Spahn and Sain, then pray for rain”. A little background: In September of 1948, a writer for the Boston Post named Gerald V. Hern wrote a poem about the Boston Braves’ two starters Warren Spahn and Johnny Sain. It went like this. “First we’ll use Spahn. Then we’ll use Sain. Then an off day, followed by rain. Back will come Spahn, followed by Sain. And followed we hope by two days of rain.”

It was supposed to be a slight on all the pitchers on the Braves’ pitching staff not named Spahn or Sain. Humorous, right? Yes it is. In fact it might be the funniest poem ever written about the late 1940’s Boston Braves. But was it fair? Let’s have a look. Read the rest of this entry »

The Marlins Are Getting A New Stadium

stadiumexteriornude

Miami-Dade County finally got it right. Last night they approved the funding of a retractable-roof stadium to be completed by 2012. The stadium vote passed by tallies of 9-4 and 10-3. (Similar to the scores of a final-weekend series between the Marlins and Mets.) The whole thing is estimated to cost $625,000,000. There will be $94,000,000 worth of parking lots. That comes out to a half-million dollar parking space for everyone who buys a ticket.

As the resident Marlins Super Fan around here, I have to say, FINALLY! Right?  This is the stadium that the Marlins have been looking for since the inaugural season of 1993. 16 years the Marlins and their fans have been waiting for this new stadium.

Now, I never have to hear “retraction” again. And they aren’t moving. Cortes and I are both psyched. (Especially, Cortes. Look at the spot his future self found!) Read the rest of this entry »

Visualizing Victory

Another great visual aid that only magnifies the enjoyment of baseball for everyone except spence who only likes watching home runs. It’s a horserace graph for pennant races. Input the year, the division and enjoy the swings. Watch the 1961 Yankees run neck and neck with the Tigers until September when they start to pull away. Watch the 2007 Philadelphia Phillies surge to victory past the New York Mets where they are promptly euthanized on the field of play for coming in second (too soon?). Hell, watch the 1903 Boston Red Sox win the pennant by 14.5 games. Every race, including the current season, all the way back to 1901. It’s worth your time.
