This won't last, so enjoy it while it does
As I type this, the Kansas City Royals are 16-11 and in 1st place in the Pacific Coast League, er American League Central (zing!). Royals fans who spend a lot of time searching the internet for acceptance from blog commenters and newspaper commenters will probably tell you that being in 1st place in early May when your team wasn’t expected to contend comes with a lot of skepticism. They’re probably hearing things like “it won’t last, it’s only May” or “this is still the Indians, Twins, Tigers, or White Sox’s division to win” or “don’t get too high on your team just yet, it’s still early.”
That last one gets me. As a White Sox fan, I heard it all year in 2008. I heard it on local radio. I heard it from Cubs fans. I read it in the newspaper. Every time I turned around, someone was telling me to calm down, that it wouldn’t last.
Well you know what? That’s the dumbest advice I’ve ever heard*. Tell me, why shouldn’t I have enjoyed it while it was happening? That would have been stupid, right? If someone told me that I could have all the sex I wanted to for 5 days, but after those 5 days were up, I could never have sex again, do you think I would consider not having sex for those 5 days because I knew that it wouldn’t last? Hell no! I would call up every single girl I knew and I’d get crackin’. Er, my wife and I would get crackin’.
So here’s my advice to you, Royals fans: enjoy it while it lasts. As you’re well aware, 1st place won’t be here for you much longer. July will come and so will August, at which time the Tigers, White Sox, Indians, and Twins will be passing you in the standings and today will be a distant memory. Zack Greinke’s 0.40 ERA will be too. So go nuts.

I think “enjoy it while it lasts” is just as condescending as don’t enjoy it at all. Except when it’s not.

I’ve been a Royals fan since I predicted them to win the AL Central and I realized how much it irritated Paris and Tampa and Spence and Rick.
Remember when John Buck hit that walk-off single in the bottom of the 11th against the White Sox? That’s when I fell in love with the Royals.
I’ve been a Royals fan ever since a newspaper in Denver had a vote in the early 90’s to adopt a major league team since Denver didn’t have one. The public selection was for the Orioles. But I said ‘fuck you’ to the man and went with the Royals.
