Cinco de MayoHappy Cinco de Mayo! This particular holiday is all about [check Wiki and insert reason here] and as you can see is very important to me and my people.

I got a chance to go see the nation’s first showing of Star Trek in IMAX last night and I have to give a wholehearted recommendation from this side of the table. Now I’m far from a Trekkie fanboy, so I don’t know if the story tied to together or if they stayed true to the characters or any of that bullshit. I haven’t watched any episodes – no Deep Space Nine or The Next Generation – or any of the movies since I was a little kid so I went into this kinda sorta not really remembering the characters from the original series.

I liked the action scenes and the way they introduced the old school characters. Some of the parts are sorta campy but will bring a healthy dose of nostalgia to the table. I will say that seeing this is IMAX isn’t a must. None of the scenes for this were shot for IMAX like The Dark Night, so you won’t miss out on anything by seeing it in a regular theater.

Now, to all of the sports that I missed last night:

Magic 95, Celtics 90: I have yet to see a highlight of this game or look at a recap, but just a quick glance of the box score tells me that Orlando was in control of much of this game and Boston had a mini-surge in the 4th quarter. It looks like no one could handle D-Ho on the boards and Rashard Lewis was a team-high +14 so he must’ve had a reasonable showing. Please share in the comments if I got any of that wrong.

Rockets 100, Lakers 92: Houston proved that you can’t ever afford to go to sleep in the Bestern Conference playoffs, you can’t ever afford to go to sleep. Just from what I caught in the second half, no one on the Lakers could hit shit. The team went 2-18 from 3 point land and shot 44% from the field as a whole. Lamar Odom had a terrible game, only scoring 9 points and going 1-6 from the line. Yao was fantastic scoring 28, grabbing 10 and going 10-10 from the stripe.

Capitals 4, Penguins 3: Alexander Ovechkin proved that he is the most exciting player in the NHL right now, scoring three goals and leading Washington to a 2-0 series lead over Pittsburgh. Sidney Crosby also had three goals, but the last one was with 30 seconds left on a 6 on 4, so no one really counts it as legit or anything. Although he couldn’t find time to help out his team enough to win the game, Crosby found time to complain after the game:

“People kept throwing hats. I was just asking if he could make an announcement to ask them to stop. The first wave came, and then I think they were all pretty much picked up, and more started coming,” Crosby said after the game. “I just wanted to make sure that we kept kind of moving, kept the game going while we tried to get back into it.”

In hockey, they call it a “hat trick” when a player scores three goals and I guess it’s a tradition that the crowd throw their hats on the ice when the home players scores one of these hat trick thingies. Why would Crosby have such disdain for tradition? Does he not care about the past or is he just some spoiled prima donna that likes to attack people from behind and/or cry when the game is delayed for a few minutes by some proud fans? You decide.

Red Sox 6, Yankees 4: With the massive storming in the New York area, the Good Guys were worried about their families and any flooding that might’ve transpired on the stormy night. They valiantly tried to brush aside these concerns, but were unable to eek it out against the heartless, soulless Red Sox. Boston had no trouble scoring more runs because they don’t care one lick about their family, given that their wives are so ugly and their kids even uglier. Mark Teixiera had 2 homers for the Yankees, and Lowel and Bayh both jacked their 6th of the season for the HomoSox.

Royals 3, White Sox: Zack Grienke proved that he’s the Who’s Now? of the league right now, throwing a complete game shutout and striking out 10 on only 104 pitches. Can you imagine if he played in the National League? He’d probably be 12-0 and have a negative ERA and would’ve been on the cover of Newsweek and The Economist, let alone Sports Illustrated.

Dodgers 7, DBags 2: Los Angeles is now 11-0 at home behind Manny’s and Andre Ethier’s 6th home runs of the season. Arizona remains sucky and don’t look now, but LA has the best record in the bigs.
