Here at Major League Jerk, we aren’t serious very often. And we certainly aren’t in tune with other people’s feelings. We’re, well, jerks. But as the calendar flips from April to May the MLJ staff would like to point you to a worthy cause. April is World Autism Awareness Month. Perhaps we should have done this at the beginning of April rather than at the end, but Maury Brown at the Business of Sports Network, who has an autistic child, wants everyone to pass along the word that Autism is a terrible condition, one that affects 1 out of 150 children in the country, and 1 out of 90 boys.

Many athletes, most notably Doug Flutie and golfer Ernie Els, have children with autism, and they have done their part to raise awareness. The numbers shocked me. If one out of 90 American boys were being kidnapped, there would be national outrage. And yet, essentially that is what is happening, and next to nothing is being done about it. As a relative of someone with autism, this issue is something very close to me. So if you have a little extra time in your day, maybe forward this post or the link within this post to a couple people with young children you know, or perhaps to your local congressperson. Every little bit helps.
