barrybondsThis week, a representative of Barry Bonds called the Twins to see if they had any interest in the all-time home run leader.  They did not.  And I get that.  Barry’s long had an awful reputation as a clubhouse cancer.  He’s 44 and long on the downside of his career.  He would have to exclusively play DH because he can’t cover left field anymore which puts the team in a rut as that’s a position that allows AL teams to rest guys without losing their bats (and having someone only DH can put a strain on this rotation).  All of these are valid reasons for not wanting Barry Bonds.  How did GM Billy Smith respond?

“Who do you want me to get rid of, (Delmon) Young, (Michael) Cuddyer, (Carlos) Gomez, (Denard) Span or (Jason) Kubel?” Twins general manager Billy Smith said Thursday. “Which one?”

Uhhh…let’s see.  Do we get rid of the former #1 overall pick with the anger issues who (as a corner outfielder) hit a whopping 10 home runs last year?  Or do we get rid of the guy who hit a combined 19 over the past two years?  Or the bat-sniffing lead off man who gets on base at a .296 clip?  Or the guy who’s worth -2 runs above a replacement player in terms of left field defense?  Which of these gems WOULD I HAVE TO SIT?  Huh?  Tell me Barry.  Who do you want me to sit?

Or, do you take the guy who at age 42, hit 28 home runs, got on base 48% of the time and OPS’d at a rate of 1.045 all while only costing the team 3 runs in the field over the course of 110 games.

I think the correct response is: any of them.
