Miami-Dade County finally got it right. Last night they approved the funding of a retractable-roof stadium to be completed by 2012. The stadium vote passed by tallies of 9-4 and 10-3. (Similar to the scores of a final-weekend series between the Marlins and Mets.) The whole thing is estimated to cost $625,000,000. There will be $94,000,000 worth of parking lots. That comes out to a half-million dollar parking space for everyone who buys a ticket.
As the resident Marlins Super Fan around here, I have to say, FINALLY! Right? This is the stadium that the Marlins have been looking for since the inaugural season of 1993. 16 years the Marlins and their fans have been waiting for this new stadium.
Now, I never have to hear “retraction” again. And they aren’t moving. Cortes and I are both psyched. (Especially, Cortes. Look at the spot his future self found!)
The construction of the stadium will create upwards of 20 (You look it up.) new jobs in the Miami area over the next 3 years. With the new stadium, Miami is hopeful to host an All-Star game as well as the 2013 WBC finals. That’s not even taking into consideration all the World Series that will run through Florida now that the Marlins can start spending money on players.
That’s right. For years we’ve heard the excuse that ownership wasn’t going to invest big money into the team until the city invested money into the team. Now we’ve got it. The Marlins can finally start spending frivolously. Hanley Ramirez’s contract was a good faith effort. I believe that if the stadium vote had passed 2 months ago ManRam would be sporting a teal skull cap right now. (Or whatever the hell that thing is he puts on his head.)
I fully expect the Marlins to go after LeBron in 2010.
So here we are. On the doorstep of a new era of dominance for the Florida Marlins. Once the new stadium opens all sorts of boat people will start to pack the stands (along with Stigs) and buy concessions and other fan-ish activities. Every night there will be a full stadium watching overpaid players you’ve heard of who have been on the team for more than a season. By then I should even have a job so I’ll be able to afford MLB Season Pass so I can watch.

sweet ride, future cortes
+1
I am just excited that they had a parking spot for their one fan who lives there. Well done Miami.

Tampa I hate when they okey-doke on the hot sauce. You would think a restaraunt that dispenses sour cream from cauk-guns woudlnt care.
Rick that is a concept Chipolte needs to snag.
finally a place fitting for the superstar known as hee-seop choi.
