habsSo I was wandering around the internet last night when I stumbled on a message board and a thread about a huge scandal involving the Montreal Canadiens. There was wild speculation about hookers and drugs and the police waiting at the airport to take some of the Habs into custody when they touched down upon their return from a loss in Pittsburgh early this morning. From there I followed along on a Canadiens’ message board. I even listened to Vancouver sports talk radio for a couple hours while I played poker and hit refresh on the message boards. Here’s what I learned.

[Most of this is from a translated version of a story on RDS.ca.]

La Presse (pictured), a French language newspaper in Montreal, is set to release a damaging story today regarding Roman Hamrlik and Andrei and Sergei Kostitsyn of the Canadiens. The story involves Mangiola Pasquale who was arrested on charges of drug trafficking and has been linked to organized crime. As part of the police investigation, Pasquale’s phone was tapped and some of his conversations were with the Kostitsyn brothers. Hamrlik has  been seen out at Montreal bars with Mangiola.

Apparently, this started with a February 12th Canadian sting operation that put 55 gang members in police custody. According to this story, they were members of the Crips and Hell’s Angels. Who knew there were Crips or motorcycle gangs in Canada? Especially the part of Canada that primarily speaks French.

So this isn’t exactly a big deal right now. At least not to the American public. North of the border might be a different story as the Habs are the Yankees of Canada.

Hopefully more sordid details will come out as the day progresses. Drugs, hookers, etc.
