da-kid-and-starbury

Stephon Marbury’s tenure in New York finally officially coming to an end. With that ending, we’re looking at a new beginning in Boston. If history has taught us anything, it’s that the Knicks should be celebrating and the Celtics should be stocking up on canned goods and building a fallout shelter.

Marbury is the ultimate “Ewing Theory” guy. Boston will be his 5th team in 12 seasons. At three of his first four stops his departure came on the eve of a rebirth for that franchise. Minnesota, News Jersey, Phoenix and New York all saw first-hand the unfulfilled potential that is Stephon Marbury.

He’s gone to the Playoffs 4 times in his career. Two of those trips were in his first two seasons in the league.

In the middle of  his third season (The strike-shortened 98-99 season) Marbury was traded from the Timberwolves to the Nets. The year after Marbury left Minnesota won 50 games and finished third in the West.

Marbury went on to lead the Nets to two sub-.500 records.

Before the 01-02 season he was traded to the Suns for Jason Kidd. Behind Kidd, Kenyon Martin, Kerry Kittles and Richard Jefferson the Nets made the Finals and had what was at the time (I believe) the biggest single-season turn around in NBA history.

The Suns missed the playoffs in Marbury’s first season. Then behind young talent (Marion, Amar’e, Joe Johnson) the Suns snuck into the playoffs in the 02-03 season. With young impressionable kids, it was time to move on.

In the middle of the 2003-2004 season Marbury was traded to the Knicks. The next season Steve Nash arrived and the Suns went from a 29-win team to a 62 win team. Something to do with Steve Nash.

Even America has been infected by Steph. In 2004 Marbury was on the Bronze medal Olympic squad. Don’t think the disappointing summer wasn’t without highlights – Marbury set the American single game scoring record with 31. Not bad for a kid from Brooklyn. The next Olympics? Bronze 4 Gold homie.

The New York years are fresh enough that we don’t really need to relive them. There was a lawsuit, 28-or-so wins a season, “Fire Isiah,” the Larry Brown feud. It was fucking clown shoes.

Yesterday, Marbury and the Knicks finally agreed on a buyout. With Marbury officially off the team, will the Knicks make up the final 2 1/2 games and sneak into the playoffs for the first time since Marbury’s first half season in New York? I’ll put the over/under at yes and take the over!

As for Starbury – He’s all but headed to Boston to play with the defending champs.

So celebrate with me friends, the Celtics’ 1-and-a-half year streak of success is all but over. Marbury has proven himself time and again to be a clubhouse cancer. Teams struggle with him and get better as soon as he’s out the door.

While this incarnation of the Celtics might be too good and too tight to fall victim to the usual Marbury poison, he’s not going to do anything to help them. If the Celtics do anything except repeat this year, then it stands to reason that they got worse with Marbury.  Not that anyone would be surprised.
