Which of these teams is not like the other ones?

We might need to create a new Nobel Prize to honor poor analysis in the field of Sports Mathematics.  And if anyone’s going to win the first one, it has to be John Hollinger whose brilliant mathematical mind devised a formula so groundbreaking, that it successfully ranked the Milwaukee Bucks fifth out of a field of thirty, the night after losing to the Charlotte Bobcats (ranked #22) by 10 points.  Please join me as we go down the list and marvel at Mr. Hollinger’s bravery and examine the many facets of the Bucks greatness that make them deserving of the five spot:

1. Overall record: 16-19 [good for 16th best record overall]
2. Record over last 10 games: 6-4 [good for a 4 way tie for 10th place]
3. Last game: 10 pt. loss to the Charlotte Bobcats [good for being laughed out of the gym]
4. Average margin of victory: 0.43 pts/game [good for 16th place]
5. Division Rank: 3rd [good for 3rd in their division]
6. Conference Rank: 8th [in the LEastern Conference]

It seems like the best part of the Bucks lately is that they’ve blown out the Clippers, Knicks, and Bobcats (ZOMG!!!!) in order to stretch their margin of victory over the last 10 games to a whopping 8.1 pts/game.  Great job Bucks.  Way to rub it in their loser faces.

I know, I know, Power Rankings are stupid.  But this is supposed to be the impartial formula that removes any and all objectivity in order to demonstrate who’s playing the best basketball at any given point.  It’s supposed to demonstrate which teams would be the toughest team to face if the playoffs were to start right now.  It’s his way of examining the numbers beyond the basic W/L formula which can be very misleading.  And it’s absolutely flawed.  Take another look: the Bucks have been sitting in fifth place for at least two days.  I know they’ve been playing better of late, but they’re still the shitty ass Milwaukee Bucks.  If they made the playoffs, I still wouldn’t rank them 16th.  I’d put two or three Western Conference teams that didn’t make the playoffs ahead of them before I put them on my list of teams that I feared the most.

Clearly Mr. Hollinger, in all of his infinite wisdom and baldness, needs to tinker with his formula a bit.
