Try finding a safe for work picture that is hump day related. It’s impossible.

One of my favorite features on football telecasts is on Sunday Night Football when the starting lineups are announced and the players say what colleges they go to. Normally I have a casual interest in hearing where NFL players went to school, but my interest was piqued during Sunday night’s game between the Vikings and the Bears. Here were two NFL teams who were fighting for their division lead, and the majority of their starters went to smaller schools.

The game featured starters from New Mexico (Bears LB Brian Urlacher and Vikings OT Ryan Cook), Harvard (Vikings C Matt Birk), Northern Iowa (Vikings CB Benny Sapp), William & Mary (Vikings S Darren Sharper), Louisiana-Monroe (Bears WR Marty Booker), Georgia Southern (Bears RB Adrian Peterson) and North Dakota (Vikings TE Jim Kleinsasser).

While it’s true that the best player in the game, the REAL Adrian Peterson, went to Oklahoma, and the Vikings best defensive player Antoine Winfield went to Ohio State, the Vikings second best defensive player, DE Jared Allen went to Idaho State. In all, 18 players from those two teams went to schools in D-1AA, D2 or D3. And countless others played at non-traditional football schools, such as Northern Illinois or Ball State.

Looking around the league, nearly half of the teams have started a quarterback who played at either a lower level, or non-traditional football school. Several of those QBs, like Joe Flacco, Gus Frerrote, Ben Roethlisberger, and Jeff Garcia could be taking their teams to the playoffs. The moral? If you want to win in college, maybe it’s dumb to go to a school like one of these, except perhaps North Dakota which has the most recent national title of any school named so far, but maybe it’s better to go to a school where you can stand out a bit more if you’re mainly interested in NFL success.

If you’re a Facebook user, undoubtedly you’ve read a “note” posted by one of your friends. Many of these notes come in similar forms, the list that asks you personal questions that you answer and post, the list that tells you to list your favorite songs, yadda yadda. But perhaps the most annoying one is the note posted by someone trying to sound smarter than he or she really is. One of my friends did this the other night, opining about such topics as spending too much time with his girlfriend, getting his masters (yea right), why girls like assholes, etc. Personally I was impressed he could string together a complete sentence or two. The point is, why do people insist on sounding smarter than they really are? Whether it be about politics (Mike NYC), the latest international crisis, ie the hostage situation in India, or baseball statistics, no one is impressed by you trying to break down every little thing like it’s life and death. Oh and one more thing: he sounded like he had all those topics fairly figured out, but he needed me to explain the Texas-OU Big 12 Championship Game situation to him, proving once and for all that the BCS is the most confusing thing in the world.

So I’ve been on a bit of a health/exercise kick recently. I wouldn’t call myself fat or out of shape, but I definitely think losing a few wouldn’t be a bad idea. Problem is, I’ve decided losing those last 10ish pounds is about the hardest thing of all time. Seriously, all I eat per day is a sandwich and either soup or salad with some cottage cheese for lunch, and either a sandwich or perhaps some grilled chicken and either soup or salad for dinner. And I excercise over an hour a day: running 2ish miles, biking a couple more, lifting for the rest of the time. Yet those last few won’t go away. Any advice would be appreciated. Although having seen some of you, perhaps this is the wrong place to ask.

Baseball-wise, one of the best times of the year is coming up: prospect season. Second perhaps only to the draft for pure baseball nuts, seeing where prospects are ranked is a great day. I’ll be debuting my first Top 100 ever in February-ish, but a question: Is there any interest in perhaps doing top 10 lists by division or position? Leave any yes/no votes in the comments.
