Try finding a safe for work picture that is hump day related. It’s impossible.
One of my favorite features on football telecasts is on Sunday Night Football when the starting lineups are announced and the players say what colleges they go to. Normally I have a casual interest in hearing where NFL players went to school, but my interest was piqued during Sunday night’s game between the Vikings and the Bears. Here were two NFL teams who were fighting for their division lead, and the majority of their starters went to smaller schools.
The game featured starters from New Mexico (Bears LB Brian Urlacher and Vikings OT Ryan Cook), Harvard (Vikings C Matt Birk), Northern Iowa (Vikings CB Benny Sapp), William & Mary (Vikings S Darren Sharper), Louisiana-Monroe (Bears WR Marty Booker), Georgia Southern (Bears RB Adrian Peterson) and North Dakota (Vikings TE Jim Kleinsasser).
While it’s true that the best player in the game, the REAL Adrian Peterson, went to Oklahoma, and the Vikings best defensive player Antoine Winfield went to Ohio State, the Vikings second best defensive player, DE Jared Allen went to Idaho State. In all, 18 players from those two teams went to schools in D-1AA, D2 or D3. And countless others played at non-traditional football schools, such as Northern Illinois or Ball State.
Looking around the league, nearly half of the teams have started a quarterback who played at either a lower level, or non-traditional football school. Several of those QBs, like Joe Flacco, Gus Frerrote, Ben Roethlisberger, and Jeff Garcia could be taking their teams to the playoffs. The moral? If you want to win in college, maybe it’s dumb to go to a school like one of these, except perhaps North Dakota which has the most recent national title of any school named so far, but maybe it’s better to go to a school where you can stand out a bit more if you’re mainly interested in NFL success.
If you’re a Facebook user, undoubtedly you’ve read a “note” posted by one of your friends. Many of these notes come in similar forms, the list that asks you personal questions that you answer and post, the list that tells you to list your favorite songs, yadda yadda. But perhaps the most annoying one is the note posted by someone trying to sound smarter than he or she really is. One of my friends did this the other night, opining about such topics as spending too much time with his girlfriend, getting his masters (yea right), why girls like assholes, etc. Personally I was impressed he could string together a complete sentence or two. The point is, why do people insist on sounding smarter than they really are? Whether it be about politics (Mike NYC), the latest international crisis, ie the hostage situation in India, or baseball statistics, no one is impressed by you trying to break down every little thing like it’s life and death. Oh and one more thing: he sounded like he had all those topics fairly figured out, but he needed me to explain the Texas-OU Big 12 Championship Game situation to him, proving once and for all that the BCS is the most confusing thing in the world.
So I’ve been on a bit of a health/exercise kick recently. I wouldn’t call myself fat or out of shape, but I definitely think losing a few wouldn’t be a bad idea. Problem is, I’ve decided losing those last 10ish pounds is about the hardest thing of all time. Seriously, all I eat per day is a sandwich and either soup or salad with some cottage cheese for lunch, and either a sandwich or perhaps some grilled chicken and either soup or salad for dinner. And I excercise over an hour a day: running 2ish miles, biking a couple more, lifting for the rest of the time. Yet those last few won’t go away. Any advice would be appreciated. Although having seen some of you, perhaps this is the wrong place to ask.
Baseball-wise, one of the best times of the year is coming up: prospect season. Second perhaps only to the draft for pure baseball nuts, seeing where prospects are ranked is a great day. I’ll be debuting my first Top 100 ever in February-ish, but a question: Is there any interest in perhaps doing top 10 lists by division or position? Leave any yes/no votes in the comments.

Rex Kramer, Jump Adder Onner to the rescue. Me thinks Fetch was just trying to push Clown’s post down as far as possible.
All of those links that interest me are cool. All the ones that don’t interest me suck.

re:micrea monroe…
DAYUM!!!1
Oh and yes the chick is hot..well done
I would suggest eating 5-6 small meals a day, and splitting up your workouts. You want to do cardio first thing in the morning, before you eat. Then have breakfast, 1st lunch, 2nd lunch, snack, and dinner. Get your lift in wherever your schedule permits, after lunch or later in the evening. By spacing out your workouts and your meals, you keep your metabolism raised throughout the day instead of it spiking high and gradually coming down only to spike high again.
st. Bear is right…I have lost 65lbs thus far and the key is 6 meals spread out…lower calories and overall awesomeness
stop eating. it’s the best, most effective diet on the market.
Fetch knows.
Didn’t you write about Micrea Monroe before?
i love how people thing a RB is the best player in the game. madden much?
The other variable you can try changing is your workouts. Are your lifts compound movements that involve multiple muscle groups? Have you tried supersets or circuit training? When you go for runs, do you incorporate interval training?
The best player in the league is Joe Thomas
/spencer’d
St. Bear has solid advice.
try not eating carbohydrates after 4 pm, but up your protein intake. your body will turn to fat for energy.
I would suggest eating
5-6 small meals24 buffalo wings a day, and splitting up yourworkoutssmoke breaks. You want todo cardiocrank one out to Kianna’s Flex Appeal first thing in the morning, before you eat. Then have breakfast (sausage gravy and biscuits is a good first course), 1st lunch, 2nd lunch, snackpitcher or two of Bud Heavy, and dinner at a strip club buffet. Get yourliftoffice dooks in wherever your schedule permits, after lunch or later in the evening. By spacing out yourworkoutsScotch intake and your meals, you keep your metabolism raised throughout the day instead of it spiking high and gradually coming down only to spike high again./rex kramer reality’d
monkey…not this year. best player in the NFL this year is probably either haynesworth (again), kris jenkins or peyton manning.
RB’s are expendable…even a great talent like AP can be replaced as long as that line stays intact.
I don’t know who things an RB is the best player, but I know many who think an RB is the best player
Nah, I bought that plan via infomercial for
54 monthly payments of $99.99 (+shipping/handling) and it didn’t take.spence, so you’re saying i should stick to vodka or gin after 4pm and hold off on the loaded fries or nachos until the next morning? sounds like torture…
clown, you should try the stomach virus version then. it’s all but guaranteed to loosen that waist band.
hawkeye…you’re a punk ass hooker. how DARE you correct my grammar. pistols. dawn. be there.
rex…im saying you should eat baking lard by the handful…at all times.
but then he runs the risk of his gun slipping out of his velour sweat pants, miz. not safe. not safe at all.
Early cardio and small, continuous meals are the main points. Even if you can’t do cardio early in the day, do like 10mins of easy cardio before you workout. Keeping your heart rate high during lifting makes your body burn fat. Also, if you want to eat big, do it early in the day. A big breakfast will never hurt you (besides, it’s the best meal of the day!). No carbs after 4pm is all good, but it’s fucking impossible to live your life like that. If you can do it, more power to you but if you’re doing cardio in the morning you’ll be fine.
Circut training and intervals are nice to mix in from time to time. Depending on how many days you exercise, alternate between strength training and endurance. If you can pull it off, intervals are a really good (and quick) way to finish your workout.
twss?
i was always under the impression that you should lift first, to deplete stored glycogen in your muscles, and then do cardio after you lift, so instead of burning carbs, you’re burning fat.
spence – 8 o’clock. I do my killin’ after breakfast.
Big breakfast, ill? Good call.
so you guys are telling me that a sedentary lifestyle consisting of boat barhopping, golden tee, chicken wings, scotch, 2nd-hand smoke, and yuengling is not the way to go?
step one…get up off the couch
step two…sit back down and rest you worked really hard getting up
My exercise regimen
Spence, you’re absolutely right. You’re not going to get a workout in only 10 minutes. I think what ill was talking about is more like a warmup.
rex – everything but the Yuengling.
Schells > Yuengling
not at all…golden tee rocks.
Spencer – I know people that only do cardio afterwards and prefer it. Personally, I like to do light cardio, lift, then do hard cardio to finish. The light cardio increases blood flow that expediates the trasfer of energy throughout the body. It basically starts the fat burning process faster than say, hoping on the bench. Once the process is started your body will continue to burn fat at a faster rate when you are performing more moderate exercises, like lifting.
You want to keep your heart rate around 115-135 (relative to age/body comp) to burn fat, anything above that is burning carbs/muscle.
My webcam is all set. Enjoy. (Clown, keep your pants on, por favor)
yeah, the 10mins is a warmup. Just a light jog/bike/elliptical.
ill…do you do all of this in a wife beater?
/Sportsgal’d
thanks, ill. looks like i’m good to go. haven’t even gotten out of bed yet and, after just now checking, my resting heart rate is 130. Last time I was buying my Magnum XLs, I checked my BP on the freebie machine at Walmart’s pharmacy and it came in at 198/90, so I should be good for another year or two.
ok, ok…i just misunderstood.
/i seriously need to get back into shape
Roman – No. I can’t handle the d00ds that workout in beaters. Or the old guy in the locker room that refuses to wear the towel around his waist.
How am I supposed to dry my hair? You want me to bring two towels to the gym?!!?
/Roman
ill – is he the same old guy who always puts one leg up on the bench when you’re sitting down putting on your socks or tying your shoes?
Rex – I find it hard to believe your HR is ever resting with all the cougar crushing you do… So all things considered I would say 130 is solid for a during/post crushing HR.
Btw, thanks for the brine recipe. I didn’t use it for the family, but tried it for some friends and I pre-thanks giving. It was delicous.
my favorite is “locker room guy who blow dries his butt hair” while standing in front of the mirror. usually further identified by the presence of a gold, haring-bone necklace and coin purse almost touching his 15 yr old flip-flops.
i got to the gym last week, and 2 naked guys were talking to each other like it was no thing. i was only there for a short workout (45 minutes), so when i was done, they were still naked and talking to each other. it was fucked up.
good deal, ill. brining = heavenlicious
Bear – or the guy who chooses to shave, brush his teeth and talk football without the towel.
Look buddy, I don’t know what kind of locker room educate there was on the USS Arizona, but this has got to stop.
Could that have come out any worse…
/twhs
Stigs did you feel left out?
educate = etiquette?
blow me, miz.
you wish, bammer.
Tampa, i went in the shitter with a wide stance, but nobody took the bait.
Ill, doesn’t fat burning occur from like 140 to 160?
fetch – at that level, you’re going to be doing more cardiovascular work, exercising your heart to bring more oxygen to your muscles, rather than attacking fat stores.
Plus, you won’t be able to work out as long than if your HR was in the 115-130 range, thereby burning less fat.
