adam-dunn-gayYesterday the Dbacks announced that they would not offer arbitration to home run hitting/strike out swinging/no defense playing left fielder Adam Dunn.  The move effectively puts an end to both the Adam Dunn and Micah Owings eras in Arizona as the team that signs Dunn would not be responsible for sending any draft picks to the Snakes as compensation.  The reasoning behind the move is that there is less of a chance that another team would be willing to sign Dunn and thus a more likely chance that he would accept arbitration.  This means that Dunn could cost the Snakes $16-$18MM if he were to win his arbitration case.  This was deemed unacceptable in this economy so they passed.

I’m not sure what the long term effects of this deal will be since we have to wait and see how the prospects develop for the Reds.  But the Snakes definitely did not prosper from this trade.  They rented a player for a few months that cost them more in that time than Chris Young, Justin Upton, and Stephen Drew combined.  They failed to make the playoffs and gave up minor leaguers for a guy who won’t even net them any draft picks.  Let’s go ahead and chalk this up as another failed move by Josh Byrnes.  We’ll place it atop the pile with the Eric Byrnes deal (3 years/$30MM????) and Carlos Quentin trade (eff that dude).

The Snakes did offer arbitration to Juan Cruz, Orlando Hudson and Brandon Lyon.  Cruz and Hudson are considered class A free agents and will net them two picks if they decline arbitration and are signed by another team.
