dyemvpWith news that Walt Jocketty is rumored to be willing to deal Homer
Bailey and one other player for Jermaine Dye, I feel it may be
informative to look at how valuable Dye actually is.

He’s coming off of a very productive 2008 with the stick, so he would
definitely help the Reds’ offense. Bill James and Marcel project wOBAs
of .358 and .356, respectively. Per 500 PAs. That translates to 10
runs above average. However, players of Dye’s age require a playing
time discount, which I’m conservatively calling 20%. That gives him an
offensive projection of 8 runs above average.

Reds Spring BaseballAs for defense, Chone projects Dye as -6 runs as a corner outfielder.

For a position adjustment, give Dye -7.5 runs as a corner OF.

Lastly, Dye gets a 25 run replacement level boost for playing in the AL.

Added up, Dye projects to be a 19.5 run above replacement player, or
roughly 2 wins above replacement (WAR).

On the open market Dye would be worth 2*$4.84 million, or $9.7
million. His 2009 salary is $11.5 million. The Reds shouldn’t even be
interested in Dye IF THE WHITE SOX GAVE HIM TO US. Adding in two
prospects makes this the easiest “Just Say NO!” decision of the
offseason.

Don’t do it, Walt. A smart team never would. Let’s be smart.
