So this is a little late, but hey better late than never right?
In my undying curiosity, I wanted to see how the Phillies obtained everyone on their postseason roster for the 2008 World Series. So with a little poking around the Internet (thanks, Al Gore) I’ve figured it all out so you don’t have to do any work, just read.
Joe Blanton: Acquired from Oakland in trade this year for Josh Outman, Adrean Cardenas and Matthew Spencer. Went to Kentucky.
Clay Condrey: Signed with Philadelphia before the 2004 season. Went to McNeese State.
Chad Durbin: Signed a free agent contract with the Phillies in December of 2007.
Scott Eyre: Designated for assignment by the Cubs in August, subsequently traded to the Phillies for Brian Schlitter.
Cole Hamels: 2002 first round pick of the Phillies.
JA Happ: 2004 3rd round pick by the Phillies out of Northeastern.
Brad Lidge: Traded along with Eric Bruntlett to the Phillies from the Astros in exchange for Michael Bourn, Michael Costanzo and Geoff Geary.
Ryan Madson: 9th round pick in the 1998 Draft.
Jamie Moyer: Traded to the Phillies in August, 2006 for Andrew Barb and Andrew Baldwin.
Brett Meyers: Phillies first round pick in 1999.
JC Romero: Designated for assignment in June of 2007, signed with the Phillies 2 weeks later.
Chris Coste: Signed as a free agent with Philadelphia in 2005. Was a three time All-American at Concordia in Moorhead, Minnesota. Coste is also a Fargo, ND native.
Carlos Ruiz: Signed as an international free agent in 2004 out of Panama.
Eric Bruntlett: Traded along with Brad Lidge for Michael Bourn, Michael Costanzo and Geoff Geary.
Greg Dobbs: Waived by the Mariners in 2007, claimed by the Phillies.
Pedro Feliz: Signed as a free agent before the 2008 season, was previously with the Giants.
Ryan Howard: Phillies 5th round pick in the 2001 Draft.
Jimmy Rollins: Phillies 2nd round pick in the 1996 Draft.
Chase Utley: Drafted by the Phillies in the 1st round of the 2000 Draft out of UCLA.
Pat Burrell: Drafted 1st overall by the Phillies in 1998 out of Miami (Fla.) also the only player this year who also won a College World Series.
Geoff Jenkins: Signed as a free agent with the Phillies in December, 2007.
Matt Stairs: Traded on August 30 from the Blue Jays for Fabio Castro.
So Taguchi: Before 2008, Cardinals declined his 2008 option, then didn’t offer arbitration. Phillies signed him in December, 2007.
Jayson Werth: Signed a deal with the Phillies in December of 2006.
Shane Victorino: Selected in the 2005 Rule 5 Draft from the Dodgers. Was offered back to Los Angeles, but they declined. Victorino was also a Rule 5 pick when the Dodgers selected him from the Padres.
If there is one thing we can learn from looking at the Phillies roster, it is the value of the draft. Eight Phillies were drafted by the club, and their 3 infield stars, plus World Series MVP Cole Hamels were all drafted by the club. In addition Victorino was a draftee via the Rule 5 Draft. While the Phillies made shrewd free agent signings (Werth, Romero) and some good trades (Lidge, Moyer) the core of their team came from players they drafted, just how a champion should be built.

Nick work fetch, no wonder you had so much trouble writing that paper, your time was taken up with this.
Has anyone seen Jason Werth and Edge (the wrestler, not the U2 ,member) in the same place?
“Nick work Fetch”
CBH- I dont know what type of sick shit You, Nick and Fetch are into but please leave it off MLJ.
Nice work, Fetch.
CBH, i saw that somewhere. but i can’t find out where.
CBH- I dont know what type of sick shit You, Nick and Fetch are into but please leave it off MLJ.
Confused. Did Leon say this?
Sparty, Iverson is going to Detroit?
Leon’s a big fan of MLJ.
Why is that a bad trade? They weren’t winning shit with the way their team was, bout time Joe D shook it up.
Cbh it was a joke and are you still trying to figure out who Leon is?
Don’t know but not really trying.
Billups is better than Iverson.
Throwing in McDyess weakens the frontcourt rotation.
Giving up more than you get is a bad idea (at least for this year). I don’t know how it affects their cap situation in the future.
awful trade…hope they go thru with it.
Pistons are going to the finals.
They had nothing to lose in this deal, so they should just go lose in the Eastern Conference Finals again? The team as constructed wasn’t winning jack.
A jump would have been nice
/refuse to acknowledge a good job of assembling a roster of a group of assholes
@cbh: The Cavs as constructed weren’t beating the Spurs two years ago. Does that mean we should have shaken it up and traded for Quentin Richardson?
I just hadn’t been informed when Chauncey Billups became a Hall of Famer and Allen Iverson was the suck.
Fetch you should have titled this “Meet the World Phucking Champion Phillie’s”
I always forget to add a jump. I need to hire an intern to do that for me. Sportsgal?
