roman…it all depends on the flow of the game. if you can pick up 4-5 yards a play and are flowing, why not try and get a 4th down even if you’re just outside that range? obviously if you’re not clicking or facing a better D that changes it all, but most teams can pick up 4-5 yards easy. plus it opens up the entire playbook and you can put a nail in the other team’s coffin if you convert.

a converted 4th down to keep drives going is HUGE.

TO me 4th down territory is only in between the 30-40 (long Field goal area) that is not sacrificing field position to any major degree..and a missed field goal loses you yards…at the 50..all you need is 25 yards to get 3 points…it is rough to recover from giving up that type of field position

yes, field position is important, which is why i’d only go for it around midfield and closer. i just think there’s a lot more strain on the defense than there is on the offense in situations like that, and that there are very few HC’s/OC’s with enough balls to truly run a 4th down play well.

look at the chargers and colts…4th and 1 around midfield…they call a 10 yard PA play…money because the D had 10 in the box. sure, you can’t run it like that everytime, but i’d rather be aggressive in a situation like that.

Well, his conclusion may be right, but his logic is faulty.

He goes by the average play getting 4-5 yards, which means you should go for it on 4th and 4-5 or less the majority of the time.

But you have to consider the median play, IMO. And also he really needs to look at a break-even % since the result (keep ball/lose ball) is too important.

The 4th down thing is retarded…Field position is everything and he is essentially saying that teams should forgo that for another shot to move the ball…it is asinine…if everyone went on 4th down the element of surprise is gone and teams would play the down better…then the percentage of conversion would go down

nick…im right with TMQ on the 4th down thing. the defense is at your mercy then unless you telegraph an iso or dive. if youre around midfield or closer, you should always go for it if it’s closer than 4th and 4.

Spencer has most of it except I think his football thoughts are no great shakes either…the whole Spygate garbage..I HATE when people make a big deal out of things for their own promotion..that got him way too much attention…The Jersey thing is a personal annoyance but has nothing to do with my overall hatred of his material
