After two days of waiting with open arms, the World Series is finally upon us.  Tonight is the first time in the storied history of the Tampa Bay Rays that they will play in the World Series.  It’s the night all their fans have been longing for.  In the National League, the Phillies are playing in their first World Series since 1993 (/science).  The fans in Philadelphia are ready to riot and it really doesn’t matter the result of the Series.  Even if they don’t win, they’ll still have that championship they won last year.  Anyways, here is my prediction.  Make sure to leave your predictions in the comments section.  If you get it right, you’ll recieve lollipops and asspats from the entire staff here at MLJ.  (Home team’s pitcher listed first).

Game 1:  Kazmir (3 starts, 1-0, 4.02 ERA) vs. Hamels (3 starts, 3-0, 1.23 ERA)

Interesting fact here, Kazmir was the winning pitcher in the All-Star game, which determined home field advantage for the A.L., while Dan Uggla Brad Lidge got the loss in that game.  Scott Kazmir was impressive in his start in game 5 against Boston and look for that to continue here.  Lefty batters have just 3 hits off him this postseason.  Watch Utley and Howard get shutdown tonight.  Hamels has been lights out this post season.  He should continue to dominate against the Rays balanced lineup.  I think this game will be low scoring, with two very good pitchers going.  The game will come down to a big home run or defensive blunder.  My prediction:  Phillies take game 1.

Game 2:  Shields (3 starts, 1-2, 3.72 ERA) vs. Myers (2 starts, 2-0, 5.25 ERA)

I never thought Brett Myers was a good pitcher.  Sure, he beat the Brewers, but he pitched above his skis in that game.  I think the Rays will come out and smack him around.  They will get to the Phillies bullpen early in this game, setting the tone for games to come.  Shields, who has been pretty good, will shut the Phillies down.  Big game James will pitch deep in the game to get the win.  My prediction:  Rays take game 2.

Game 3:  Moyer (2 starts, 0-2, 13.50 ERA) vs. Garza (3 starts, 2-1, 3.32 ERA)

The series will move back to Philly with Old Man Moyer on the mound.  He will continue to suck.  I see the Rays knocking him around similar to the way they beat Tim Wakefield around in the ALCS.  Longoria and the big bats will put on a show.  Garza will be rock solid for the Rays.  My prediction:  Rays take game 3.

Game 4:  Blanton (2 starts, 1-0, 3.27 ERA) vs. Sonnanstine (2 starts, 2-0, 3.46 ERA)

At this point, I think the Phillies are dead in the water.  The fans will be booing and throwing shit on the field.  Shit, if an early snow storm was to sneak through Philly, you can guarantee their will be snowballs laced with batteries and hypodermic needles thrown at the players, coaches and their wives and children.  My prediction:  Rays take game 4.

Game 5:  (Pitchers undecided, game in Philadelphia)

We’ll probably see a rematch of game 1 when it goes back to Tampa.  Philadelphia will need a miracle from their ace Hamels in this game.  He would be pitching on full rest in game 5.  They will need a miracle to stop Rays here.  I think the domination of Tampa Bay continues, and they coast to their first World Series title ever.

My prediction is Rays in 5.  I wouldn’t be surprised to see a sweep from Tampa, but I would be surprised if they lost.  I don’t see a weakness in their rotation or bullpen.  Balfour has been hittable of late, but the emergence of David Price in game 7 of the ALCS could give him the job of closing games.  If something happens, and my predictions are wrong, game 6 and game 7 will be back in Tampa.
