Earlier today, The Big Lead posted this in regards to yesterday’s events and how the Mets fell short yet again. All of this is well and good but at the end of his post he added this paragraph:
Somewhere, Willie Randolph silently cheered, and wondered if he’d be up for Girardi’s job when the Yanks are sputtering at the All-Star break next July. Mets fans, who have to endure two September collapses in a row, enjoy your inept GM for the next four years.
Now, I am as pissed as the next Met fan at this “collapse”. I have fallen into a blind rage about many things and changes need to be made. I am also a realist and realize the good and bad of things. I felt the need to respond to this and did so with a comment. The comment would not post. I then e-mailed TBL and sent him the comment. He looked at it and said he will see what he can do. He is not ducking me. Just a Wordpress thing. I use Wordpress and understand. I then was responding to CRM on his condolences and I brought this up. He tried to help and I then sent him the comment. His response was:
That’s pretty fucking long. Don’t you have access to some sort of internet-based journal where you could post your thoughts?
I agreed. It was pretty long. And yes, Hef leases me space on this here blog. So I am going to post my comment. But before I do, I want you all to know I am not ducking the subject of the “collapse”. I have lots of thoughts and feelings and a story involving a Gay (Not Bruce Gay but actual Gay. NTTATWWT) waiter in an Orlando Airport and his complete lack of common sense in regards to certain New York based clientèle and watching the biggest game of the year. But first let me address the Omar scenario. This is the comment I sent to TBL:
How is Omar inept? Are there bullpen issues? Sure. But Heilman was not hideous entering this year. Feliciano was a good lefty specialist and shit the bed. Joe Smith is good and up and coming. He traded for Johan Santana and got him signed. He made lopsided deals to get John Maine and Ollie Perez. He drafted Mike Pelfrey, Daniel Murphy, Nick Evans, Bobby Parnell and Jon Neise. He traded for Delgado and LoDuca which both paid off with a division title. He convinced the Wilpons to spend on Beltran and Pedro when they were gun shy after the mess of the early part of the decade. He did not trade Reyes when everyone felt he should trade him to Texas for Alfonso Soriano. He added guys like Pagan, Tatis, Cancel, Easley, Marlon Anderson and Endy Chavez. He had bad signings in Luis Castillo and Moises Alou. But he also traded Milledge for Church and Schneider. The book’s out on that but it worked this year. Omar did not blow out Billy Wagner’s elbow. He did not give John Maine a bone spur in his shoulder. He has done way more good than bad. His team has been winning and in contention in his four years on the job. Explain how that is inept. The Man hired Willie and fired Willie. Both were the right move. Jerry Manuel was the right move as well. You are pissy because of your love for Willie which is ridiculous. His firing made total sense. It just had improper timing. Your lack of knowledge on baseball is laughable. Before you make a blanket statement like Omar Minaya is inept how about reviewing things first. Inept was Steve Phillips with an open pocket book. Inept is Jim Duquette trading Scott Kazmir. Inept is you writing Omar is inept.
I mean this. If I trust anyone to bail us out of this it is actually Omar. He is going to get bullpen guys for this team. Do you think he won’t? He is not some mindless GM who is pulling the all is well routine. I hate those guys. He is looking at the big picture. He knows he has put together winning clubs and he knows his one big flaw has been getting together a good bullpen. He has proven he can. The 2006 team had a great bullpen. Just shitty starters. He is going to do what ever he can to fix this team. With that said, don’t fuck it up.

Roman teach me how to belittle TBL and get away with it.
Rowr!
where is the rest of it?
like i said before…white guys.
agreed with most of what you said here. the 4 year extension seems like too much from the outside. but he really couldn’t have done much with the bullpen when they started sucking in the second half. but he did truly appear upset and willing to take some blame after the game. he seemed ready and willing to be held accountable. and that is respectable if nothing else.
stigs..I will address it..I intend to keep then people wanting more..I am such a tease
I think the lack of ellipsis caused the intuitive Wordpress software to identify it as spam.
We need a new post. CRM just won this one.
Oh, and nice job Roman.
Roman, was spending on Pedro smart? He gave you one good year and has been injury prone the last two, no?
cbh…yes and no…If we don’t spend on Petey..Beltran is definitely not happening and Delgado may not have said yes to the trade. Petey’s signing was more about what it meant for the Met Franchise’s status to Latin players and to Free Agents. His 2005 season was superb. The beginning of 2006 was great…the rest was not. Now in a purely baseball sense this contract was not good…but somethings mean more than numbers…sometimes you need to spend money to make money so to speak…Petey was an expenditure that was necessary to get where they need to be in the eyes of the fans and other players
Roman, what is up with Petey for next year? Where are your Mets peoples right now?
what is up with that nasty mole on Beltran’s right ear? Dude, didn’t he like $90 million? take care of that thing.
Hahhaah Stigs, I thought same thing when watching him on ESPN last night.
i feel as if Beltran has not performed in his tenure there like he is expected to.
of course, he is much better than Melky.
If the Mets want to consistently win, they need to draft guys who are going to be more than platoon players in the first round (sorry Hef).
Nice post Roman.
As for the Pedro signing it was ABSOLUTELY worth it. It was a case of spending money to make money.
It was a “culture spend” if I may coin a phrase.
The Giants did something similar with Zito but it was an epic fail.
Also, give OMAR credit for not signing Zito, hanging on to Big Pelf and not signing Glavine (ok, the guy wanted out but we didn’t exactly drop a billion dollars at his door either). Oh yeah, what about that Brian Bannister guy? Um, he sucks too.
Omar’s glaring error is Luis Castillo and he can simply eat that contractin a trade. Alou? Anyone would have made that signing at that price. Yes, he relied heavily on old players and that will change.
Other things will change too. I pray that it’s not Beltran, Wright or Reyes, but I suspect that at least one of those names is on the table this winter. Sign and trade Delgado for pithing and let Murphy play first.
sparty, no one can perform the way they expected Beltran to. he was downright ridonculous in the playoffs for Houston and played himself into a huge contract. but he has been pretty solid for the Mets. he’s a really really good player.
On my fantasy team I was starting Jeff Francouer ahead of Beltran in April because Beltran was strugg a ling so bad, he got it together though.
Nick P is this basketball league still on?
Is that picture of Roman when he was first told about TBL’s post? I only ask because “Helmet” sounds like an Anglo name.
Don’t forget the amazing trades the Mets have made recently, too. I mean Victor Zambrano was a stud. And they gave up some shit prospect right?
/I have no idea if Omar made this trade. Probably Steve Phillips.
sparty, you feel that way bc of one week in the postseason where Beltran played out of his mind. He has performed better than he should have in that park and plays a center field like no other. Many fans have unrealistic expectations about Beltran.
fetch…cute..It was Jim Duquette and that trade is 41/2 years old..it is the worst trade in Mets history…even over the Seaver trade and Ryan deal
so beltran sucks, go it.
Beltran was the Mets Best player this month…he was phenomenal..his problem is that he is streaky so when he is not hitting..it looks very bad..but he explodes when he is hitting
no comments on TBL for 16 minutes and counting. IB and CRM killed it.
RWH-off topic. a client of mine just told me he is giving up his tickets. this is the like the 10th person i know that said that. the waiting list is going to dwindle quickly.
@stigs – I was gonna make a comment on that MMA post about that chick looking like she gave a hell of a handjob and broke both wrists. then, I realized that was a stupid comment so I didn’t submit it. I should probably reread my comments more often before I sumbit them and check for stupidity.
miz-go check the MMA post now.
whoever she was, she’s really hot.
Yeah I was going to say why is she that guy’s ex gf he must be gay but I post first too many times.
somebody’s a comedian.
sparty…I am on the waiting list under my own name…if my situation changes when it comes to that..I may be back in but with everything going on…How can one justify 10 grand to keep the right to buy two seats for $2500 a season combined? Unless they are very comfortable or have others going in with them it’s tough
i understand, RWH. It is a killer expense. 20000 a seat, plust 700 a game is insane.
with all that said, the market is tanking…
Are the tickets for the new Meadowlands stadium, or baseball?
Beltran is fucking awesome and underpaid.
Easily best defensive centerfield and an above average hitter.
Nick..I actually think he is properly paid
Hawkeye..football
Are the personal seat licenses a one time expense, or yearly?
One time expense..they spread it over three years..my seats are $5K a seat that means to keep two I need to pony up 10K…there are seats that are 20K a piece
Sheesh, that’s lots of coin to come up with to keep the season tickets. Very few people are going to be able to keep them, and prices are only going to go up.
Hawkeye, mine are 4 grand a seat, my brother and I are splitting the it for our 3 seats.
the day that I am required to pay a significant PSL for Tennessee football tickets is the day that I quit buying season tickets and giving my required “donation” to the athletic department.
miz – They’re going a system like that when the new Gopher Football stadium opens next year. Considering how mediocre that program has been, they’re asking alot.
@Hawk – luckily, Neyland is too historic at this point for them to tear it down and build a new on. So, they’ve been making improvements for the past couple of years and have a major improvement/update coming up.
ticket prices have gone up every year despite the quality of the product decreasing and I’m afraid they’ll add PSL’s soon.
Hawkeye, have you seen the new Big Ten Network commericial? where they joke about Kirk Ferentz joking about the new stadium to entice recruits?
sparty, what new stadium?
exactly.
Hef should have posted the Bill Clinton Weekend Update, that was a million times funnier than the Palin thing.
