As a lifelong Buckeye fan and two time graduate, you might expect I know or care about the tOSU baseball team. Well, that’s not the case. I really don’t follow them much at all because college baseball is pretty much teh Strahan. However, from 2002-2005, my roommate played for the team, so I at least had a casual interest during those years. Joining the team the same year as my roommate was Scott Lewis, a lefty pitcher from Washington Court House, Ohio (15 minutes from my hometown). He was named the Big 10 Freshman of the Year in 2002. In his next season, he was named Big 10 Pitcher of the Year, going 9-1 in 83.2 innings while striking out 127 with only 24 walks and 48 hits allowed. He got hurt early in his junior season and subsequently decided to leave tOSU after being drafted by the Indians (3rd round). He would have been an easy 1st rounder, if not for the injury. Since recovering from Tommy John surgery, his minor league career has gone pretty well (366 innings, 359 strikeouts, 82 walks).

Last night, he made his debut with the Indians, and it really could not have gone much better. He scattered 3 hits over 8 innings, striking out 3 and walking none. He showed excellent command of the strike zone, mixing up speeds and location, which made it tough for hitters to make good contact. A lot of his outs were weak grounders and lazy infield flies. He really only had two balls that were hit hard, one a double down the line and the other a warning track fly that Grady chased down. Other than that, it was smooth sailing for Lewis, and an excellent start to what will hopefully be a long career.

For at least one night, I was an Indians fan, and it wasn’t too bad.

Oh yeah, and Go Bucks.
