Randy Johnson Could Win 300 This Year

For those of you on the East Coast who go to bed right about the time most Diamondback games are starting, you may not be aware of Randy Johnson’s last 8 starts which have been nothing short of fantastic.  Since the All-Star Break, RJ has pitched 40+ innings, has an ERA of 1.56, a WHIP of .97 (!) with 31 Ks and 3 BBs.   He’s been pitching out of his mind lately.  Yesterday’s loss to the Astros came as a result of a choppy first inning.  Maybe he wasn’t warmed up, maybe he wasn’t feeling it early, whatever.  He made one bad pitch and gave up all three runs right there in the first.  He then pitched six more scoreless innings to give his team a chance.  Unfortunately, Roy Oswalt was dealing and the Snakes offense didn’t have a chance (after putting up 23 Runs in the previous two games).

Now, I agree that wins/losses for pitchers is stupid, but 300 wins for a starting pitcher is still considered one of those hallowed milestones and RJ is currently sitting on 294 with 8 starts to go.  He probably won’t make it this year, but if he keeps pitching this well (which is phenomenal regardless of age) he should get a roster spot next year (if he wants it).

  1. @Hef - is he a HOFer?

  2. this is almost as intriguing as Mike Mussina being close to getting his first 20 win season of his career.

those first two games were independent of the third game. so don’t say thats the reason they didn’t score. Oswalt was just too sick yesterday for them.

  4. @miz: no doubt he’ll get in. he was the most dominating/intimidating lefty for a long time. plus, #2 all time on the strike out list is a big plus.

  5. If Randy Johnson is not a Hall of Famer, then there shouldn’t be a Hall of Fame

  6. Winning 300 games in a season is pretty tough, hef.
