After a rare 5 day weekend (Thursday-Monday. Seriously, don’t have a job. It’s great) it was nice to get back to really watching good baseball last night. Tons of good series, including Brewers-Cubs, Red Sox-Angels and Mets-Marlins on tap. But, of course, only one series can lead off Quality Start when I’m at the helm…

Twins 7, White Sox 0: Denard Span hit his first career major league homer, and has filled in admirably in center field for Carlos Gomez. Justin Morneau (Canadian!) also hit a 2 run homer, and Kevin Slowey threw a 6 hit shutout. The White Sox’ lead in the AL Central is down to 1.5 games

Marlins 7, Mets 3: Fernando Tatis continued to delve into the world of anabolic steroids, as he went 2-4 with a triple (!), but it was not enough, as the bullpen couldn’t hold on for the Mets after John Maine left mysteriously in the 5th inning. Robert Andino hit a pinch hit 2 run double, and looking at the boxscore I’d say the Marlins used everyone from their 25 man roster.

Angels 7, Red Sox 5: Manny Ramirez hit his 20th homer of the season off K-Rod in the 9th, but Rodriguez still notched his 44th save of the year. I hate whoever has him in my fantasy league. Will the Red Sox trade Manny? Well, one thing is for sure, that might be the only topic covered more than Brett Favre, since he plays for the Red Sox. Future 2008 AL MVP JD Drew (for serious) went 2-3 with a walk.

Indians 5, Tigers 0: Grady Sizemore went 2-3 with a steal, but the real story was Paul Byrd, who turned back the clock, throwing 7.2 shutout innings. Kelly Shoppach somehow hit a homerun, which was only equaled in surprise by Asdrubal Cabrera’s round tripper. The Indians’ win knocks the Tigers back even farther in the AL Central. Thanks fellas.

Blue Jays 3, Rays 1: Proving once again that Canada is superior to Florida, the Blue Jays defeated the bandwagoners. Matt Stairs (Canadian!) hit his 11th homer of the season, and AJ Burnett threw 7 innings, giving up 1 unearned run, to improve his record to 12-9. In other news, the Blue Jays announced AJ Burnett will be staying put.

Cubs 6, Brewers 4: The Cubs and Brewers traded rallies throughout the game, but Chad Gaudin got yet another win for the Cubs. More importantly, CC Sabathia finally had an off day as he threw just 6.2 innings, giving up 3 runs. Alfonso Soriano went 2-4 with a double and a bomb.
