It’s a rough time to be a Washington Nationals fan. Today the Nats became the first team to be a perfect 0.00000 in the Baseball Prospectus Postseason Odds Report, meaning that out of 1,000,000 simulations run by BP’s Clay Davenport, the Nationals made the playoffs in zero of them. The Nats’ average record over those 1,000,000 simulations was 59.8-102.2

Obviously this has to be viewed as a big step back for the Nationals, who went 73-89 and outperformed expectations so greatly that Manny Acta was a popular candidate for Manager of the Year.

Obviously the breakout of Ryan Zimmerman that never happened is the main culprit this year. Zimmerman’s labrum is a big reason why his power didn’t show up, but beyond that he definitely took a step back offensively, and this was after Joe Sheehan predicted a David Wright type year for Zimmerman. However, even though this year didn’t go well for him I think Zimmerman still has a David Wright type couple of seasons in store, especially since defensively Zimmerman is way way way better than Wright. So all in all, even though this year didn’t go well for the Nats, they might be headed for a bright future-especially if they avoid trading top 20 relievers in all of baseball for fringe prospects.
