According to ESPN, the Indians have agreed to send Casey Blake to the Los Angeles Dodgers for Carlos Santana and right-handed pitcher Jon Meloan.

Santana is hitting .323, with 14 homers, for Inland Empire, in the Class A California League. The hard-throwing Meloan is 5-10, with a 4.97 ERA, at Triple-A Las Vegas — but has piled up 335 strikeouts in only 262 innings in his minor league career.

I’ll let Fetch pontificate on Meloan’s value since I’ve never heard of the guy, but as for Santana, anytime you can trade for the best Latino guitarist ever, it’s a move you have to make.

Old Timey baseball man Ned Colleti had this to say about Blake:

Casey Blake is a gamer,” Dodgers GM Ned Colletti said. “His experience and character will be a plus as we head down the stretch in the final two months of the regular season.”

Thanks for the insight, Ned. You’re truly a breath of fresh air in a world full of VORPy assholes.

For what it’s worth, Casey Blake is a very solid player. His OPS over the last 3 calendar years is .811, which should see a boost when he starts to face easier NL pitching. He’s a capable defender at 3B and can play either corner OF spot. Considering there’s a strong chance Blake will be worth at least a Type B compensation pick when he leaves in free agency (unless Colleti signs him – don’t rule it out), this seems to be a great deal for the Dodgers.
