I didn’t watch very much baseball yesterday (yes, I know - what’s new?) because the whole day I was waiting in anticipation for the Margarito/Cotto fight. This was already deemed to be the match of the year, a slugfest for the ages. Still, everything I read previewing the match didn’t prepare me for last night. Margarito was taking hard, spot-on punches from Cotto during the whole fight and he wasn’t fazed in the least. Cotto, who probably fought the perfect fight according to his game plan, just couldn’t hurt the Tijuana Tornado. I never saw this coming. C’mon - Margarito was the same boxer that lost to skinny Paul Williams! Anywho, if you didn’t watch the fight last night, here’s a synopsis of what went down and here’s an emotional recap from the post-fight press conference. I highly recommend catching the replay on HBO next week. Here’s to the rematch being scheduled as soon as possible.
As far as baseball…
Cardinals 10, Mets 8 (14): Albert Pujols hit a 2-run homer in the top of the 14th that may have not landed yet. MLJ RWH favorites Carla Delgotit and Fernades Tatiz had some homers, but it was all for naught. My favorite piece from the AP recap, “Portly Mets C Robinson Cancel stole his first career base in the fifth inning.” Nice. More bad news for the Mets: SI’s Jon Heyman reports that they aren’t going to even try and pick up Manny Ramirez. Dumb.
Marlins 3, Cubs 2 (12): Jeremy Hermida hit 2 homers and scored the winning run in the 12th as the Cubs wasted a 10 strikeout performance from Rich Harden. Don’t the Cubs know that they need to win these games while they can. Harden is due to get injured any day now! Lou Piniella was thrown out in the 9th inning, but I’m still trying to get confirmation that it was Aquafina-related. The Marlins now sit a game back of the Mets in the NL East.
Brewers 6, Astros 4: The Cubs had a 5 game lead over the Brewers at the All Star break. You can kiss that baby goodbye, as the Brewers have now won 9 out of 10 and now sit tied atop the NL Central with the Cubbies. Ryan Braun homered (reports are that he didn’t stare at his handiwork this time) and had 4 RBI, the most worthless stat in the history of ever.
Phillies 10, Braves 9: Atlanta scored 9 runs in the 4th inning, but it still wasn’t enough as the Phillies responded with a 7 run 5th to take back the lead and this time for good. Brad Lidge notched his 23rd save. Both the Phillies and Marlins now sit 1 game behind the Mets.
As far as the AL, all the division leaders won. That’s pretty much all you need to know.

thank god there’s a replay…heard it was unbelieveable.
I am not happy with the video, I only prefer Death Cab for Cutie
