Under the Lights: Remembering the Old Timers

Some people remember exactly where they are when they hear or see something monumental.  Good, bad or otherwise.  I remember being in German class in H.S. on Tuesday, September 11, 2001.  I also remember being in Iowa City for a Wisconsin Badgers Vs. the Iowa Hawkeyes football game on November 19, 2004 when I heard the news about the Indiana Pacers/Detroit Pistons brawl.  I remember being in my friend Mike’s basement watching the Capital One Bowl in 2005 when Drew Tate hooked up with a last second touchdown to Warren Holliday to beat LSU.  And today, July 22, 2008, Estelle Getty passed away.  I will never forget being at work when Mizerle threadjacked TBL and announced the news.  See, my mom used to wind down by watching this show when I was a child.  My mom is 100% Italian.  She has 3 sisters and they all resemble a character on the show.  And my Nana is very similar to Sophia.  So I always have a special place in my heart if I ever flip through the channels and see the show on.

I would also like to remember Hall of Fame baseball reporter Jerome Holtzman who also passed away recently.  He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1989.  Holtzman wrote 6 books including “No Cheering in the Press Box.”  He covered baseball in Chicago for over 40 years before taking a job with MLB where he became baseball’s official Historian. 

Of course, even with the sadness of these two passings, baseball games will still be played tonight.  And we will be watching.  Here is a few games you might be interested in:

Phillies at Mets:  This NL East battle will be highlighted by the Philidelphia debut of Joe Blanton.  Both teams sit atop of the East with Florida just one game back.  Santana will take the hill of for the Mets.

Brewers at Cardinals:  Jeff Suppan will take the mound against his former team as he returns from the DL.  Along with these 2 teams, the Cubs will be battling for that division title and the Wild Card.  Everyone’s suprise ace Kyle Lohsh will take the mound for STL.

Cubs at Diamondbacks:  After getting shut out last night, the Cubs look to put some runs up on the board.  The Cubs could use this time to put some distance between them and the teams chasing them while those two teams are beating up on each other.  Jason Marquis will square off against Yusmeiro Petit who is filling in for the demoted Micah Owings. 

Twins at Yankees:  I’ll include the Twins here because Fetch is bitching because UTL is up a little bit late.  And also, my boss left today to catch a game at Yankee Stadium tomorrow and then see the Yankees take on the Red Sox this weekend in Boston.  Two shitty pitchers will square off in the Bronx tonight.  Look for a slugfest.

    Not as good for low and slow, but very good for everything else. Plenty big, and easily moving the coal rack up and down is very nice. Easy to access the coals to add or move around some.
