If my dad was a general manager, then maybe I could be a professional baseball player. Then again, my dad was kind of a prick and still wouldn’t have picked me to play for his baseball team.
In case you hadn’t heard, Kenny Williams, GM of everyone’s least favorite team in Chicago drafted his own son in the fifth round of the MLB Draft. His son, who many didn’t have going before the tenth round, is undoubtedly excited.
Kenny Williams Jr., a senior at Wichita State, wasn’t even an everyday player and was academically ineligible for the 2007 season. According to scouts, he’s a good athlete, but he’s 22 years old and only played in 12 total prior to 2008.
Williams (Sr), reportedly didn’t want to take him saying, ”I had some serious reservations about selecting him, and at one point I told our guys to let him go elsewhere.” He was talked out of it by his head scout, Doug Laumann, who was high on his athleticism. Not his baseball skill per se, but his speed and athletic ability.
My favorite tidbit from the SunTimes article:
Last year, the Sox drafted Oney Guillen, the middle son of manager Ozzie Guillen. He’ll be playing again this season in Great Falls, Mont., in the Rookie League. But Ozzie’s youngest son, Ozney, who will be a high school junior, is the player whom scouts are watching most closely.
Ozzie named his kids Oney and Ozney??? That’s gotta be worse than any crime against language that George Foreman ever committed.
