That’s right, it’s a college world series themed day today. The Arizona State University Sun Devils Women’s Softball team won their first NCAA championship yesterday, kicking the holy hell out of Texas A&M by the score of 11-0 behind a four hitter by Katie Burkhart.
Hitting machine Kaitlin Cochran finally came around, slugging a three run homer in the fifth inning making the score 4-0 and ultimately putting the game out of reach.
The Devils went 5-0 in the World Series outscoring opponents by a score of 24-2. This was also the largest margin of victory in a shutout in a WCWS clinching game.
As an ASU alum, it’s nice to see the title not head down to Tucson. The Wildcats have won 8 titles since 1991 and have started a rivalry in which ASU had not been able to even compete.
A quick note on the ASU/UA rivalry. This is the most one-sided rivalry (in terms of who gets hyped up about it) that I’ve been witness to in all my years. I graduated from ASU and I never once cared about the UA Wildcats.
For one thing, Tempe is far superior to Tucson as a college town. In fact, there are very few good things about Tucson in general. Nobody in Tempe talks about the Wildcats during the offseason unless the sentence goes, “I was accosted by some Wildcats this weekend when I wore my ASU gear down to Tucson. What’s their deal down there? Are they retarded or something?” Seriously, wear a Sun Devil shirt in Tucson and people will give you the stink eye in Tucson. Not just college kids, adults in suits pretending to have important jobs. I have to drive down to Tucson every week for business and if I so much as mention that I went to ASU, the stupid jokes come pouring out.
Wear a UA shirt in the Phoenix metro area and maybe somebody will say something as a joke, but no one really cares if there’s no game that week. Most ASU fans are more concerned with USC than with our instate rivals.
Can we get a ruling on this? Anyone care to weigh in on the matter? Is this the only one sided rivalry on record? Former ASU alum, am I way off base?
